NYON: The 2021 UEFA Champions League final will take place in either Munich or St Petersburg after European football’s governing body received bid dossiers from nine member associations to host its club competition finals in two years’ time.
Germany has put forward FC Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena to stage the 2021 edition of European club soccer’s premier tournament, while Russia has proposed that the game take place at Zenit Saint Petersburg’s Gazprom Arena for the first time.
UEFA will announce the venue for the 2021 Champions League final in September, when it will also reveal the hosts of the 2022 and 2023 editions of the flagship game after announcing that it has opened the bidding process for the two subsequent iterations of the match.
The 70,000-capacity Allianz last hosted the Champions League final back in 2012, when Bayern lost to English side Chelsea on penalties. The Gazprom Arena, which seats 67,800 fans, has never staged the showpiece fixture, although it was used as a host stadium for last year’s FIFA World Cup.
Elsewhere, Gothenburg’s Gamla Ullevi stadium looks set to stage the 2021 UEFA Women’s Champions League final after Sweden was the only member association to submit a bid for the fixture ahead of the 15th February deadline.
Meanwhile, the 2021 UEFA Europa League final will be held at either the Dinamo Arena in Tbilisi, Georgia, or the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, home to Spanish side Sevilla.
Finally, four member associations have put forward bids to host the 2021 UEFA Super Cup, which pits the previous season’s Champions League and Europa League winners against each other in a one-off fixture. The potential host venues of that game are Dinamo Stadium in Belarus; Helsinki Olympic Stadium in Finland; Windsor Park in Northern Ireland; and the Metalist Stadium in Ukraine.
The UEFA executive committee will select the hosts of the 2021 Women’s Champions League, Europa League and Super Cup on May 29.
This year’s Champions League final is being staged at Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano, with the 2020 edition set to be held at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul.
