ROME: Milan neighbours Internazionale and AC Milan have finally agreed on a joint approach to redevelopment of the Stadio Meazza in San Siro which they share.
Completion by 2023 is the target according to Italian media reports for a project which would mean demolition of the present stadium and construction of a €600m venue close to the present site.
Plans have already been approved by AC Milan and the city council with Inter expected to follow suit shortly.
Both clubs are expected to contribute a large portion of the construction costs, while naming rights will reportedly generate an additional €25m per year.
The complex would feature a 60,000-capacity stadium, a 5,000-seat venue for concerts and a shopping complex. The design is based on 82,500-seater MetLife Stadium in New York City which is home to the NFL’s Giants and Jets.
Inter and AC signed a memorandum of understanding back in November to work together either to modernise the Stadio Meazza or build a new stadium.
Last month Inter chief executive Alessandro Antonello said: “We envisage a smaller capacity because the average attendance of the two clubs is 60,000. What matters is the experience for the fans, it might be a smaller stadium but an excellent one.”
Milan president Paolo Scaroni said: “We’ll have the most beautiful stadium in the world. We want Milan to have a great stadium and make Milan the capital of football. Perhaps a new stadium would be easier, but there are also large-scale renovations like Anfield.”
Both teams have played at San Siro, for more than half a century, with AC Milan having had the venue as their home since 1926, and Inter since 1947.
