—- The 29th Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Congress, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia today, has re-elected Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa by acclamation for a second four-year term until 2023. Shaikh Salman, whose Presidency began in May 2013, was the only candidate for the position.There were initially three candidates confirmed by the AFC Electoral Committee following the completion of the eligibility checks on March 1, 2019. The number was reduced following the withdrawals of HE Mohamed Khalfan Matar Saeed Al-Romaithi (UAE) and Mr. Saoud A. Aziz M A Al-Mohannadi (Qatar) – both of whom threw their full support behind Shaikh Salman. 

Five AFC Vice Presidents confirmed
The 29th Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Congress has elected in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia today the AFC Vice Presidents from each of the five AFC zones who will serve for the next four-year term (2019-2023).Mr. Saoud A. Aziz M A Al-Mohannadi (Qatar) was re-elected by acclamation for another four-year term for the West Zone. Joining him are three new Vice Presidents who also confirmed their places by acclamation – Mr. Mehdi Taj (Islamic Republic of Iran) for the Central Zone, Mr. Zaw Zaw (Myanmar) for ASEAN and Mr. Makhdoom Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat (Pakistan) for the South Zone.

Mr. Ganbaatar Amgalanbaatar (Mongolia) was elected as the new AFC Vice President for the East Zone.

Six AFC representatives on FIFA Council confirmed
In addition to the AFC President and FIFA Vice-President, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Member Associations have today elected Asia’s six representatives who will serve on the FIFA Council for the next four-year term (2019-2023) at the 29th AFC Congress 2019 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.HE Du Zhaocai (China PR), Mr. Praful Patel (India), Mr. Kohzo Tashima (Japan), Mr. Mariano V. Areneta, Jr. (Philippines) and Mr. Saoud A. Aziz M A Al-Mohannadi (Qatar) secured the simple majority after one round of voting.

Ms. Mahfuza Akhter Kiron (Bangladesh) secured the simple majority required when she obtained the most votes in the elections for the FIFA Female Council position.

Ms. Mahfuza Akhter Kiron, who also secured the simple majority in the South Zone, will be joined on the AFC Executive Committee by Ms. Han Un Gyong (DPR Korea) for the East Zone, Ms. Kanya Keomany (Laos) for the ASEAN Zone and Ms. Susan R. A. Alshalabi (Palestine) for the West Zone – all of whom confirmed their places by acclamation.

The elections for the AFC Female Executive Committee member for the Central Zone, which was uncontested during this Congress, will be held at a later date.

Together with the AFC President, Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, who is also the FIFA Vice President, the AFC will have seven members on the FIFA Council.

29th AFC Congress concludes in Kuala Lumpur
The 29th Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Congress concluded on Saturday with AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa (Bahrain) re-elected unopposed for a second four-year term (2019-2023) at the helm of a new-look AFC Executive Committee.

“The hard work begins now. We have great foundations on which to build the future of our game in Asia, but the last four years have shown that success will only come through commitment.

“In Asia and, particularly here at the AFC, we have built a positive reputation and image in the last six years. It has been an honour to serve as your President for the last six years and now I am looking to continue our work together.

“As I have said many times – this is Asia’s time.”
