Ahmad detained in FranceFifa has confirmed that the Confederation of African Football President Ahmad is being questioned by authorities in France.A statement from football’s world governing body says it is “in relation to allegations related to his mandate while President of Caf.”It added that “Fifa is unaware of the details surrounding this investigation and is therefore not in a position to make any comment on it specifically.”Fifa is asking the French authorities for any information that might be relevant to investigations taking place within its Ethics Committee.”
FIFA Vice President Detained by the French PoliceBy Tariq PanjaPARIS — The president of Africa’s soccer confederation, a FIFA vice president, was detained for questioning in Paris early Thursday, a day before the start of the Women’s World Cup.The official, Ahmad Ahmad, was picked up at a luxury hotel by the police as part of a corruption investigation that grew out of allegations of wrongdoing made by his former deputy at the Confederation of African Football, Amr Fahmy.FIFA confirmed Ahmad had been detained, but said it was “unaware of the details surrounding this investigation and is therefore not in a position to make any comment on it specifically.”“FIFA has taken note of the alleged events concerning Mr. Ahmad Ahmad, who is being questioned by the French authorities in relation to allegations related to his mandate while President of CAF,” the soccer body said in a statement.Ahmad’s detention threatens to overshadow the buildup to the latest edition of the Women’s World Cup and this week’s coronation of Gianni Infantino as FIFA’s president for a second term. If the accusations against him are true, it also would be yet another damaging blow to the organization’s reputation and reform efforts, which were battered by a 2015 corruption scandal.Ahmad’s detention is particularly embarrassing for Infantino. His rise from relative anonymity to the presidency of CAF, one of FIFA’s largest regional confederations, was backed by Infantino, who in 2017 traversed Africa, expressing his support for Ahmad, a former politician from Madagascar.“FIFA is now clean from the scandals that tarnished its reputation and this same determination should prevail in governing bodies such as confederations. FIFA will be at the forefront of ensuring that this is enforced by everyone involved in football,” FIFA’s statement added. The pressure has been building on Ahmad for several months. FIFA began an ethics investigation into him last month after Fahmy, the former CAF secretary general, submitted a dossier outlining a number of potential ethics violations.Ahmad has denied all the allegations, saying they are part of a plot led by disgruntled former employees. He told a meeting of African officials two days ago that he would be calling for a special meeting to update them amid growing disquiet.“I prefer to make sure that dirty laundry is not washed in public,” he said. The ethics complaint at FIFA details claims that he misused hundreds of thousands of dollars of federation money to make payments of $20,000 into the private bank accounts of some African soccer leaders; to purchase a fleet of cars for his use in Madagascar; and to enter into questionable contractual agreements, including one that is tied to a company linked to one of his closest friends. That deal, with an intermediary supplier called Tactical Steel, also has been brought to the attention of the French authorities.
