PARIS: Paris Saint-Germain have been overthrown as French league champions despite winning their last match of the season 2-0 at Brest. Lille remained one point clear thanks to their own 2-1 win at Angers.
No one better than Neymar exemplifies PSG’s failure. The Brazilian closed his season with his most disappointing statistics since transferring to Spanish football with Barcelona in 2013. He played only 18 of their 38, scoring just nine goals and contributing six assists.
In his first Barça season, in 2013-14, Neymar played 26 league games with nine goals and 10 assists. Their figures improved the following season: 33 games, 22 goals and nine assists.
His best league season in Barcelona was 2015-16 in which Neymar played 34 games, scored 24 goals and provided 16 assists. In his farewell campaign he recorded 30 games, 13 goals and 15 assists.
In Paris, where he has just finished his fourth year, he won the first three domestic championships he played but due to injuries he has never exceeded 20 games in a season in Ligue 1. His debut campaign was the most outstanding: he participated In 20 rounds, he scored 18 goals and provided 13 assists.
Since then his records have waned. In 2018-19 he played 17 games, scoring 15 goals with eight assists. In the previous one, also marked by injuries he played only 15 games with 13 goals and six assists.
