LONDON: The Premier League went through three leaders in a day before champions Manchester City took over at the top.
Chelsea had started the day on top but their London derby defeat by West Ham allowed Liverpool to overtake with a 1-0 win at Wolves.
Finally, however, Bernardo Silva struck twice as Manchester City took over at No1 with a 3-1 victory over Watford at Vicarage Road.
The forward struck twice either side of half-time to put the game firmly beyond the Hornets and secure a fifth straight league victory.
Silva weaved past two defenders before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann to add to City’s advantage following Raheem Sterling’s opener.
The 27-year-old then followed up his first-half strike with a clever curled effort into the top corner for his side’s third.
Portugal international Silva now has five goals in his last five league matches.
Watford pulled one back through Cucho Hernandez, who followed up his own shot after it rebounded off a post, to deny Pep Guardiola’s side a ninth clean sheet of the season.
Kiko Femenia played in Hernandez, who struck the ball well but his shot rebounded off the inside of a post. It fell back into the path of the Colombian who reacted quickly to turn the ball in off Ederson.
City keeper Ederson is still waiting to celebrate a 100th clean sheet for the club.
Earlier positive thinking by West Ham manager David Moyes was rewarded with a 3-2 victory over Chelsea.
When Kurt Zouma could not continue in the 71st minute at 2-2 Moyes could have sealed defence but, instead, he brought on Pablo Fornals and put him in a two-man midfield with Tomas Soucek, moving Declan Rice into defence and ensuring there were four attacking players on the pitch.
Arthur Masuaku played his part by scoring the winner with a misdirected cross which caught keeper Edouard Mendy by surprise.
Liverpool owed victory at Wolves to a stoppage-time goal from Divock Origi on his 100th appearance as a Liverpool substitute.
Manager Jurgen Klopp said: “He’s such a great player, a great guy. A legend. It’s a great story.
“He’s an incredible striker. For different reasons, he has not played that often but I hope one day he finds a manager that plays him more than I do.
“He’s one of the best finishers I’ve ever seen in my life. In this great team, with our [front] three, he doesn’t play all the time but he is a very positive boy, loves the club, wants to contribute, and he did in an incredible way. I’m really, really happy for him.”
Origi’s latest strike was his 10th as a substitute in the Premier League – no player has scored more from the bench for the Reds in the competition.
His other memorable moments include the 87th-minute strike in the 2019 Champions League final and his winner in the closing stages of a 2018 derby against Everton.
At the other end of the table Newcastle won their first game of the season by 1-0 against fellow strugglers Burnley.
