KEIR RADNEDGE REPORTS: Bayern Munich’s transfer-seeking centre-forward Robert Lewandowski has won the ESM Golden Shoe for European football’s leading marksman for the second successive season.

Lewandowski’s 35 goals place him seven clear of Paris Saint-Germain’s home-loving Kylian Mbappe and eight ahead of Real Madrid’s newly-recrowned European Champions League champion Karim Benzema.

The 33-year-old is out of contract with the Bundesliga giants at the end of next season but has been strongly linked with a summer switch to Barcelona.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of his country’s Nations League clash with Wales on Wednesday, Lewandowski said: “One thing is certain today – my story with Bayern is over.

“After everything that has happened in recent months, I cannot imagine further good co-operation. I realise a transfer will be the best solution for both sides. I believe that Bayern will not stop me just because they can.

“I think that is all I can say on this subject for today. I am focusing on (Poland’s) training camp. After the training camp there will probably be time to possibly say something more on this topic.”

Lewandowski scored 50 goals in all competitions in the season just concluded, and has 344 in total for Bayern since joining from Borussia Dortmund in 2014. He has won 10 league titles and four domestic cups with the club, in addition to the 2019-20 Champions League.

Last year Poland captain Lewandowski won the Golden Shoe with 41 goals in the Bundesliga to finish 11 clear of Barcelona’s Leo Messi and 12 ahead of third-placed Cristiano Ronaldo of Juventus.

Goals by marksmen from among the top five nations in the UEFA ranking benefit from a multiple of 2.0, the next batch (places six to 22 ) a factor of 1.5 and the remainder 1.0.

Lewandowski is only the third player since 2010 to interrupt Messi and Ronaldo’s command of the award after Barcelona’s Luis Suarez in 2016 and Lazio’s Ciro Immobile last season.

As in other years the rankings does not include play-offs.
