KEIR RADNEDGE REPORTS: In the 70th minute at Tottenham the entire 61,450 crowd rose to applaud the record reign of the Queen. One or two players briefly applauded as the match against Leicester continued. One player, in particular, was galvanised by the moment.

Heung-min Son had not scored a goal all season and had been dropped to the substitutes’ bench. Spurs manager Antonio Conte had sent him on in place of Richarlison in the 59th minute. At first he struggled to find his place in the game. Then, within three minutes of the royal acclamation, he burst into life.

In the 73rd and 84th minutes Son struck two magnificent goals from outside the penalty box. In the 86th he celebrated his hat-trick after a length VAR break to prove the assistant wrong in flagging him offside. Son left the pitch at fulltime with the matchball under his arm and to an ovation all for him.

Spurs’ 6-2 win was a superb advertisement for the Premier League with drama, fine football and awful mistakes. Youri Tielemans shot the Foxes ahead with a twice-taken penalty, Harry Kane equalised immediately with his 20th goal in 19 games against Leicester. Eric Dier put Spurs ahead then James Maddison equalised just before the interval.

Leicester possess talented attackers but a weak central defence and Wales’ Danny Ward in goal is no Kasper Schmeichel. Thus Tottenham regained the lead after the break when Rodrigo Betancur punished careless Wilfred Ndidi in midfield. The stage was then set for the tribute to the Queen and Son’s fourth league hat-trick. He is the seventh player in Premier history to score three as a substitute.

Leicester have lost all six league games since opening the season with a draw against Bretford. This is their worst start to a season since 1983 and leaves manager Brendan Rodgers on the brink of dismissal.

Rodgers said: “I come in every day and see the players training with confidence but you have to win games. I can’t hide from that. It is my responsibility. Whatever happens I will have a huge amount of respect for the owners because they’ve given me great support since I have been here.”

Cooper troubles

Nottingham Forest’s Steve Cooper remains second in the sacking betting after he watched his side beaten 3-2 by Fulham on Friday night.

That made it back-to-back home defeats to their fellow promoted clubs, with Bournemouth also hitting three in their visit to the City Ground.

Steven Gerrard is third in the market despite Aston Villa’s 1-0 victory over Southampton with Wolves boss Bruno Lage next after their 3-0 defeat by Manchester City in which Erling Haaland scored his 14th goal in nine games in all competitions.
