NEW YORK: Grant Wahl, the American sports journalist who collapsed and died while reporting at the World Cup in Qatar, died from the an aortic aneurysm.

His widow, Dr Celine Gounder, said in a CBS news programme: “It’s just one of these things that had been likely brewing for years, and for whatever reason it happened at this point in time.”

She added: “The chest pressure he experienced shortly before his death may have represented the initial symptoms. No amount of CPR or shocks would have saved him.”

The findings resulted from an an autopsy performed by the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office.

Wahl, who had made his name with his work for Sports Illustrated, collapsed in the media tribune towards the end of the World Cup tie between Argentina and Netherlands on Friday. He was 49.
