AUCKLAND/SYDNEY: Sweden have assured themselves of a place in the knockout stages of the FIFA Women’s World Cup on only the second matchday but France and Brazil still have everything to play for.

The Swedes progressed into the round of 16 by despatching Italy 5-0 in Wellington in Group G while France had a late goal from Wendie Renard to thank for a 2-1 victory over Brazil in Group F.

Sweden, semi-finalists four years ago, established their secure in the last seven minutes of the first half which brought goals for Amanda Ilestedt, Fridolina Rolfo – a Champions League winner with Barcelona – and Stina Blackstenius.

Italy, with six clean sheets in their previous 13 World Cup ties, lost all hope in the second half. Ilestedt headed a fourth from a corner and substitute Rebecka Blomqvist added another in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Sweden coach Peter Gerhardsson said: “I really want to pay tribute to the players. Not for the first time I’m really impressed by them.”

The clash of title contenders France and Brazil in Brisbane saw the Bleuettes take the lead through midfielder Eugenie le Sommer’s 90th international goal in the 18th minute. Debinha equalised after the interval in an entertaining duel before Renard headed the winning goal in the 83rd minute.

Coach Herve Renard said: “Wendie Renard is the leader of the team. There was a doubt about her fitness and if she had been unable to play then it wouldn’t be the same. We were lucky to have her.” Brazil coach Pia Sundhage said: “I apologise for how we played in the first half. It should be better than that.”

Brazil would have qualified for the last 16 with victory but instead must wait until the final matchday to book a knockout spot. They must beat Jamaica in their final group match on Wednesday. Jamaica won their first match at the Women’s World Cup by defeating Panama 1-0.

** England coach Sarina Wiegman has said that midfielder Keira Walsh, carried off during the win over Denmark with a knee problem, did not suffer an ACL injury as had been feared. However she will miss England’s last group match against China.
