LONDON: Enzo Fernandez missed a crucial penalty as Chelsea lost 3-1 at West Ham in the Premier League.
Chelsea were trailing 1-1 when Fernandez was denied his first Chelsea goal by Alphonse Areola in the 43rd minute. Last December Areola had been on the subs’ bench in France’s World Cup Final defeat by Fernandez and Argentina.
The penalty failure proved costly. West Ham grabbed all three points through Michail Antonio and a stoppage time penalty by Lucas Paqueta after a foul by £115m new substitute Moises Caicedo.
West Ham played the last halfhour with 10 men after Nayef Aguerd was red-carded for a foul on Nicolas Jackson.
Sean Dyche took over as Everton manager last January to help save them from relegation. But his job is at risk already.
A 4-0 defeat by Aston Villa left Everton bottom of the table and needing victory at home to next-to-bottom Wolves on Saturday. Adding to Everton’s problems, forwards Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Alex Iwobi were both injured.
Villa’s second goal was a Douglas Luiz penalty after Jordan Pickford brought down Ollie Watkins.
