WARSAW: Fernando Santos has been sacked as national coach of Poland after less than nine months following a weak start to the UEFA Euro qualifiers.

Polish federation president Cezary Kulesza said: “I would like to thank coach Santos for his work with our national team and I wish him good luck in his upcoming sporting challenges.”

Santos, who led Portugal to success in the 2016 European Championship and 2019 UEFA Nations League, responded: “Although we have reached the end of our collaboration, I am grateful to have coached the Polish team and I wish all the best to Poland and its people, who have welcomed me so well during the time I have lived here.”

The appointment of a new coach is “now a priority”, according to the president of the Polish federation.
Santos coach took office in January after leading Portugal for eight years following the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar.

Poland, with six points, are fourth in their Euro group behind Albania, Czech Republic and Moldova after losing three of their five matches played.
