KEIR RADNEDGE at WEMBLEY: Greek players were in tears as they celebrated their 2-1 victory over England at Wembley as they honoured the memory of George Baldock.

The Greek federation had reportedly sought to have the tie postponed following the death of the Panathinaikos and former Sheffield United defender at his home in Glyfada in southern Athens. UEFA refused on the grounds that no suitable date existed.

Baldock made 219 Sheffield United appearances, including 83 in the Premier League, having started his career with MK Dons, while he joined Greek side Panathinaikos in the summer after leaving the Blades.

Coach Ivan Jovanovic, after a third victory in what was his third match in charge, said: “The whole team has gone through a very difficult 24 hours. We brought George with us into the dressing room. In such moments football comes second but he left his mark on the team and that was evident from the way the players played for him today.

“It’s difficult to explain but sometimes you get a feeling that we needed to chase a result, not to defend one. That was the feeling I got from the players. England are a good team and this forced the Greek team to be better. I congratulate the players on the courage they have shown.”

In a joint statement, the Greece players said: “It is impossible to believe that our dear friend and team-mate, George, is no longer with us. Our pain is indescribable. Tonight, we will try to reach the strength of his soul, which is a bright example for us all. Our thoughts are with his family. We will never forget you friend.”
