MUNICH: A fan died after falling from the second tier of a stand at the Allianz Arena in Munich during the UEFA Nations League final in which Portugal beat Spain.
The supporter fell about eight meters from the centre of the second tier into a media section during extra-time. Paramedics and stadium stewards rushing to treat the person but UEFA confirmed later that he could not be revived.
German reports stated that he was 34-year-old Romanian from the Garmisch district of the city.
A statement said: “There was a medical emergency at the Munich arena, and despite the best efforts of the medical team, the person sadly passed away at 00:06 (CET). Our thoughts are with their loved ones at this difficult time.”
A spokesperson for the Bavarian Red Cross said that emergency staff also had to provide psychosocial support to the patient’s friends and media representatives.
Police have reviewed stadium CCTV and believe the fan’s fall was an accident though an investigation is ongoing.
Spain manager Luis de la Fuente began his post-match press conference by offering his sympathies to the supporter’s loved ones. He said: “I want to express my condolences to the family of a fan who has died. That has made us realize what is important in life.”
Player of the Match Nuno Mendes added: “I would like to express my condolences to the family of the fan that died. It casts a pall on our victory today.”
