—- England’s trio managed a mixed night in the Champions League group stage with Chelsea winning 1-0 at home against Jose Mourinho’s Benfica, Tottenham scrambling back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Bodo/Glimt and Premier leaders Liverpool losing 1-0 against Galatasaray in Istanbul.
Jose Mourinho enjoyed a warm welcome but a disappointing return to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, a first-half own goal gifting Chelsea a 1-0 win over his new Benfica side.
A scrappy game was decided in the 18th minute when Chelsea’s Pedro Neto looped the ball to Alejandro Garnacho at the far post and the Argentine stretched to turn it across the face of goal where the unfortunate Richard Rios could only poke it in his own net.
Mourinho, who won three league titles in two spells with Chelsea, waved and blew a kiss when the home supporters sang his name.
Chelsea will be relieved to have points on the Champions League board, despite finishing the game with 10 men after substitute Joao Pedro was sent off deep into added time for two yellow cards.
Tottenham needed an 89th-minute own goal to salvage a point at Bodo/Glimt, battling back from two goals down to draw 2-2 in the first Champions League game ever played inside the Arctic Circle.
Glimt should have taken the lead from the spot when fullback Fredrik Bjorkan was clattered in the box by Rodrigo Bentancur but after having a penalty saved in his side’s 2-2 draw with Slavia Prague in their first Champions League game, Kasper Hogh skied this one over the bar.
That ensured the first half finished scoreless but Jens Petter Hauge made no mistake after the break as he curled home a superb shot in the 53rd minute.
Tottenham hit back immediately through Bentancur but the goal was ruled out for a foul in the build-up by captain Micky van de Ven and they were soon two down when Hauge struck again, this time with a left-footed effort in the 66th minute to make it 2-0.
Van de Ven pulled a goal back with a header two minutes later but Spurs continued to struggle, and when Wilson Odobert headed the ball onto the angle of the crossbar and post the hosts looked to be heading for a famous victory. They were undone by a slice of bad luck as goalkeeper Nikita Haikin blocked a shot that bounced off substitute Jostein Gundersen, who had only come on two minutes earlier, and the ball flew into the net for a late equaliser.
Victor Osimhen scored from the spot as Galatasaray dealt Liverpool a stinging second successive defeat in Istanbul. To add injury to the 1-0 result, Liverpool lost goalkeeper Alisson and French striker Hugo Ekitike with manager Arne Slot ruling the Brazilian out of Liverpool’s next Premier League game at Chelsea.
Alisson made some early key saves but could not keep out Osimhen’s 16th-minute penalty. The masked Nigerian striker stepped up after Baris Alper Yilmaz went down on being swiped in the face by Dominik Szoboszlai.
Liverpool made three changes to the lineup that suffered a first league defeat of the season by Crystal Palace at the weekend, with Mohamed Salah on the bench along with record signing Alexander Isak.
Both came on in the 62nd minute when Liverpool made a triple substitution, with Salah replacing starter Jeremie Frimpong on the right wing, after Alisson had gone off injured and was replaced by Giorgi Mamardashvili in the 56th.
The win was a first in seven years at home in the Champions League for the Turkish side.
