MADRID: Kimi Antonelli extended his Formula 1 championship lead with a calculated victory at the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix on Madrid’s brand-new “Madring” street circuit.

The Mercedes prodigy capitalised on pit-lane fortune to hold off Max Verstappen and claim his eighth win of the 2026 season.

Starting from pole position, McLaren’s Lando Norris initially controlled the pace over the tight, 57-lap street course. However, the defining moment arrived on lap 13 when Lance Stroll suffered a brake failure, parking his Aston Martin and triggering a Virtual Safety Car (VSC).

Antonelli and Red Bull’s Verstappen immediately dove into the pits, completing their mandatory tire changes under reduced speed. Norris, having just passed the pit entry when the VSC was deployed, was forced to stay out an extra lap. By the time the Briton pitted under normal green-flag conditions, a slow front-right tire change compounded his misfortune, dropping him down the order.

Once Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc surrendered the lead to complete his late pit stop, Antonelli inherited the top spot. Despite complaining of unusual steering feedback after brushing the track’s unforgiving walls, the Italian kept his cool to lead Verstappen across the finish line by 4.351 seconds. Norris recovered to complete the podium in third.

Leclerc finished fourth ahead of George Russell, who secured the extra point for fastest lap in fifth. Further back, Lewis Hamilton endured an early retirement on lap six following a mechanical brake issue.

“Lando deserved the win today,” Antonelli admitted post-race, acknowledging the VSC luck. “But we will take it.” The victory stretches Antonelli’s championship lead to 81 points over team-mate Russell as the grid prepares for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
