FES: Goup C’s headline act at the Africa Cup of Nations saw Nigeria edge Tunisia 3-2 in a thrilling encounter at the Complexe Sportif de Fès, a result that secured the Super Eagles’ place in the AFCON last 16 with a game to spare.

Victor Osimhen broke the deadlock with a powerful header after a lively first half, and Wilfred Ndidi followed soon after with a headed finish from a corner to put Nigeria firmly in control. Ademola Lookman, continuing his excellent tournament form, added a third midway through the second half to give Nigeria a commanding lead. Although Tunisia fought back late with a header from Montassar Talbi and a penalty converted by Ali Abdi, the Super Eagles held on for the win that sends them through from Group C.

This result means Nigeria join Egypt (already qualified earlier in the week) in the round of 16 and sit top of their pool with two wins from two. The victory keeps alive ambitions of a deep run and sets up a final group match against Uganda where coach Éric Chelle’s side can consolidate their position.

In Group D in Rabat Benin claimed their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations finals victory by beating Botswana 1-0. Yohan Roche’s deflected strike gave the West Africans a historic win, lifting their hopes of progressing as one of the best third-placed teams.

Elsewhere in Group D, Senegal were held 1-1 by the Democratic Republic of Congo in Tangier. DR Congo took an early lead through an incisive attack, but Sadio Mané equalised, keeping Senegal on top of the group as the heavyweights edge toward qualification.

An entertaining Group C clash between Uganda and Tanzania finished 1-1 at Stade El Barid. Tanzania struck first from the penalty spot, but Uganda responded with a headed finish from Uche Ikpeazu. A late spot-kick for the Cranes went agonisingly over the bar, denying them all three points.

Both sides remain tied in the middle of the table with one point after two games, needing strong performances in their final fixtures to stand a chance of advancing.
