PARIS: England captain Harry Kane has been named among the 30 nominees for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, capping another remarkable year in which the Bayern Munich striker established himself as one of world football’s leading performers.

The shortlist, released by France Football, recognises the finest players of the past season ahead of the awards ceremony in London on October 26 to mark the competition’s 70th anniversary.

Kane’s inclusion comes as little surprise after an extraordinary campaign in front of goal. The 33-year-old enjoyed the most prolific season of his career, scoring an astonishing 73 goals across club and international football. His exploits helped Bayern Munich secure a domestic treble, while his six goals for England played a key role in guiding the Three Lions to the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup.

Having spent much of his career earning praise for his consistency without receiving football’s highest individual honour, Kane now finds himself among the favourites to lift the famous Golden Ball. Defending Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé is once again on the shortlist, while Lionel Messi returns following another impressive international campaign with Argentina. Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal, Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland are also among the leading contenders for the award.

Kane is joined by fellow England internationals Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice, highlighting the growing influence of English players on the global stage. Their nominations reflect another strong year for England, whose performances at the World Cup reinforced the national team’s status among football’s elite.

The Ballon d’Or remains the sport’s most prestigious individual accolade, with winners chosen by a panel of international journalists. While team success often influences voting, individual brilliance is equally significant, and Kane’s remarkable goalscoring numbers have strengthened his credentials.

Whether the Bayern striker can become the first Englishman since Michael Owen in 2001 to win the Ballon d’Or remains to be seen.
