BUENOS AIRES: Hector Grondona, younger brother and key domestic ally in Argentina of FIFA vice-president Julio Grondona, has died at 74.

Grondona junior was a founder, player, coach and then president of Arsenal of Sarandi. Hector was also the club’s leading marksman with 168 goals in 349 games in the 1960s.

Later he was a successor to Julio as president of former world and South American champions Independiente of Avellaneda.

Elder brother Julio, now 80, has been president of the Argentinian football federation since 1979 and is senior vice-president of the world federation FIFA.

He is thought to be a firm opponent of proposals recently brought forward by FIFA reformer Mark Pieth for time and age limits for members of the executive committee.
