GLASGOW: Celtic claimed one of the most prized of scalps when they beat Barcelona 2-1 at Parkhead in the Champions League tonight. It was one of the Bhoys’ greatest European nights since the legendary Champions Cup triumph in Lisbon in 1967.

Goals from Victor Wanyama in the  first half and Tony Watt in the second inflicted only the Catalans’ second defeat of the season – after their beating by Real Madrid in the Spanish Supercup back in August. Leo Messi pulled one goal back for Barcelona in the first minute of stoppage time.

Elsewhere European champions Chelsea were fortunate to grab a last-ditch 3-2 home win over Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk to revive their hopes of reaching the knockout stage. A third British success was delivered by Manchester United who hit back from 1-0 down to score three times in the last 10 minutes to win 3-1 away to Braga. The game was interrupted for 10 minutes by a floodlights failure but United held their nerve to secure their place in the second round with two games still to play.
