LONDON: Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford for the first time to score the decisive goal as Real Madrid completed the double over the Manchester clubs to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Madrid, having been held 1-1 at home, hit back from a goal down to win 2-1 and 3-2 on aggregate. United took out their upset on Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir after sending off Nani for a reckless kick at Alvaro Arbeloa.

Borussia Dortmund completed their victory in the night’s other tie, winning 3-0 at home against Shakhtar Donetsk for a 5-2 aggregate success.

Danny Welbeck went twice early on, heading against a post and see another effort saved by keeper Diego Lopez. At the other end Gonzalo Higuain sent a decent chance wide in the opening stages while Ronaldo – who left United for a world record £80m – was subdued.

Reshuffle

The injury loss of Angel Di Maria just before the interval forced Mourinho into a tactical reshuffle and Madrid were still adjusting to when United struck. Rafael da Silva surged up the right, Van Persie’s shot was deflected but Nani returned the ball for Welbeck to shoot in via defender Sergio Ramos.

Then the game turned as Nani raised his foot on Arbeloa. Referee Cuneyt Cakir deemed it dangerous and, after waiting until the winger recovered from a non-existent injury, showed him the red card.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson was furious, on the touchline, and subsequently failed to attend the post-match press conference.

Madrid needed 11 minutes to turn the tie around. Substitute Luka Modric struck a superb equaliser from 25 metres and then, three minutes later, Mesut Ozil found Higuain, whose cross was turned home at the far post by Ronaldo.

The Portugal captain refused to celebrate the goal – but he was happy enough at the final whistle.
