YAOUNDE: To the embarrassment of Issa Hayatou, Cameroon’s president of the African confederation, his home country risk disciplinary action from world federation FIFA over government interference.

Jerome Valcke, secretary-general of FIFA, has written to FECAFOOT with a cautionary note about the decision of the Sport Minister Adoum Garoua to hold ‘consultation’ about the federation as well as suspend elections in the regional leagues.

FIFA has given FECAFOOT a deadline of tomorrow to to confirm that the government has pulled back from action which would contravene federation and FIFA statutes.

Failure to do so would risk the issue will be forwarded to the FIFA disciplinary committee. Garoua had set tomorrow for the start of his “broad-based consultations” over the next fortnight with all the members of the football family in Cameroon.

Tombi Roko, secretary-general of FECAFOOT, has previously refuted allegations that the federation had complained to FIFA about the Sports Minister’s orders.

The current president of FECAFOOT, Vincent Onana, spent two years in prison over accusations of misappropriation of ticket sales for the 1998 World Cup by the then minister of sports, Joseph Owona.

During his tenure of office, Augustin Edjoa attempted to harmonise the calendars for elections in sports federations but was stopped in his bid by the same threat of FIFA suspension.
