BERLIN: Pep Guardiola’s competitive debut as coach of Bayern Munich ended in defeat when Jupp Heynckes’s successor saw his European champions beaten 4-2 by Borussia Dortmund in the German Supercup.

Dortmund, pipped by Bayern to just about every prize at home and abroad last season, were inspired by two goals from Marco Reus in front of their own fans.

Bayern missed injured winger Franck Ribery and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer while Mario Gotze, their new summer signing from Dortmund, also missed the match through a reported injury.

Reus put Dortmund ahead in the seventh minute with Arjen Robben equalising in the 54th. A Daniel Van Buyten own goal restored Dortmund’s advantage two minutes later with Ilkay Gundogan striking a minute later. Robben scored again in the 64th minute to keep Bayern fans hoping before Reus decided the outcome with four minutes remaining.

Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp said: “It was a great game. We have had only three weeks of preparation, we have a few injured players and there are still a couple of weeks before the season start and yet every man played as if there were no tomorrow.”

In Holland Siem de Jong scored an extra-time winner as Ajax Amsterdam came from two goals down to beat AZ Alkmaar 3-2 and win the season-opening Johan Cruijff Schaal in Amsterdam.

Alkmaar went ahead through the Icelandic pair of Johann Berg Gudmundsson in the 51st minute and Aron Johannsson 16 minutes later. Ajax hit back swiftly through Christian Eriksen, with a deflected free kick in the 69th minute, and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson six minutes later to force extra time.

Eriksen, linked with a possible move away from Ajax, then set up De Jong 13 minutes into extra time to end a run of three successive defeats in the season’s curtain-raiser.

** Exeter City will play Fluminense next July to mark the centenary of facing Brazil in what was the five-times World Cup winners’ first-ever match. The match is planned for July 20 at Estadio das Laranjeiras inRio de Janeiro, where the original game took place.

Exeter travelled to Brazil in 1914 after being chosen by the Football Association as a “representative” English team. They won their first two games – against an English expatriate side and a Rio team – but lost the final match 2-0 to what was the first-ever Brazil”national” team.

The anniversary game will take place one week after the 2014 World Cup concludes at the nearby Maracana.
