ACCRA: Ghana need not fear their World Cup playoff return against Egypt in Cairo; the Pharoaohs will have more to fear from their own fans after suffering a 6-1 thrashing in the first leg in Kumasi.

The Black Stars were the only African team to progress beyond the first group stage in South Africa in 2010 and they are al but certain of enjoying the opportunity to repeat the magic after inflicting one of Egypt’s worst defeats in years.

The packed Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi and heavy rain was no excuse for Bob Bradley’s team.

Asamoah Gyan opened the scoring in the fifth minute and Wael Gomaa’s own goal extended the lead in the 23rd.

Egypt pulled one back four minutes before the interval with a penalty from when veteran playmaker Mohamed Abou-Treika but Ghana still went in at half-time with two-goal lead after Abdul Majeed Waris struck almost from the kick-off.

Egypt conceded three in the second half to Gyan (53), Sulley Muntari (72), and Christian Atsu (89).

The second leg is in Cairo on November 19.

Ghana had expressed concerns to FIFA over security after the recent riots in Egypt. The crushing nature of their victory at home would appear to have removed all possible tension from the occasion.
