RIO DE JANEIRO: World federation FIFA has insisted there is no reason for concern that weekend violence in Brazilian football will be repeated at the World Cup next year.

The weekend of the official draw for the finals  was the worst possible moments for the eruption of mayhem at a game between Atletico Paranaense and Vasco da Gama.

Sunday’s game on the final day of the season had to be halted for 70 minutes as fans chased and fought each other in the stands. Police reacted with tear gas. Three people were seriously injured and one was removed by a police helicopter which had landed on the pitch.

At least 30 people are estimated to have been killed in incidents in and around Brazil’s stadiums this year.

Sunday’s game, which was organised by local clubs under the auspices of the Brazilian CBF but without the security controls basic to World Cup matches.

A FIFA statement said: “For the 2014 FIFA World Cup a very comprehensive security concept is in place in an integrated operation between private and public security authorities to ensure the safety for fans, players and any other stakeholder involved in the event.

“The concept has worked very well during the FIFA Confederations Cup and is built on models used at previous FIFA World Cups.”
