DOHA: Qatari-owned Paris Saint-Germain lost a ‘home from home’ friendly by 1-0 against fellow Champions League contenders Real Madrid in front of a 40,000 crowd in the Khalifa Stadium.

The match marked the end of a winter break training camp for the French champions who return home to face second division Brest this weekend in the domestic cup.

PSG coach Laurent Blanc started with his senior team while Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti, his predecessor on the PSG bench, sent out a mixed team of seniors and reserves and then changed them all at half-time.

The hyped repeat duel between World Cup qualifying rivals Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Cristiano Ronaldo was short-lived, with the Portugal captain being substituted early in the game.

PSG had chances through Edison Cavani, Ibrahimovic, Motta, Lucas and Coman but were beaten by a 20th-minute strike from Jese. Madrid, omitting Gareth Bale among others, were unlucky to hit the posts through Jose Rodriguez and Karim Benzema.

Both clubs face German opposition in the second round of the Champions League: PSG face Bayer Leverkusen while Madrid play Schalke.
