LONDON: Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are in sight of the Champions League semi-fnals after decisive victories in their first leg ties of the quarter-finals against Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea respectively.

Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo both scored as Madrid moved towards their fourth successive Champions League semi-final with a 3-0 victory over Dortmund.

Bale scored from close range after three minutes, before Isco doubled the advantage with a low shot from the edge of the area. Ronaldo added a third after the break when he danced past goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller and slotted in.

Bale has now scored five goals and assisted three more in eight Champions League appearances for Real Madrid

Jurgen Klopp’s side, who were beaten by Bayern Munich in last season’s final, will retain faint hope they can turn the tie around, but they will also realise they were soundly beaten by a Real side who was not operating at their very best.

The German side did have their opportunities. They had 12 efforts on goal, although only two were on target, and without suspended striker Robert Lewandowski, they lacked poise in front of goal.

Angry Mourinho

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho criticised his side’s “joke” defending and blamed his misfiring strikers after a 3-1 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain.

He saud “The third was not a goal, it’s a joke. Gary Cahill says sloppy. I say ridiculous.”

Mourinho fielded winger Andre Schurrle on his own up front, leaving £50m signing Fernando Torres on the bench. He explained the gamble by saying: “I’m not happy with my strikers, I have to try things.”

Ezequiel Lavezzi swept in an early half-volley to put the hosts ahead before Eden Hazard levelled from the spot after a foul on Oscar.

But David Luiz bundled into his own net to restore PSG’s lead and, after Edinson Cavani fired wide, Pastore’s solo effort swung the tie the home side’s way.
