SAO PAULO: Marco Polo Del Nero, the Brazilian delegate on the FIFA executive committee, is preparing his takeover of the country’s football confederation writes KEIR RADNEDGE.

Del Nero stepped up as a vice-president of the CBF after Jose Maria Marin succeeded disgraced Ricardo Teixeira as president two years ago.

Marin has said he will step down at the imminent election though his term of office does not formally until next year; Del Nero has already been designated as sole candidate successor.

In the meantime Del Nero indicated in the Sao Paulo football gala that he wanted to see his state federation deputy, Reinaldo Carneiro Bastos, take up his own succession there.

At the gala, Del Nero told delegates that Carneiro Bastos “has been my supporter at all times and if you decide he is the right man that’s fine by me.”

Del Nero said that Carneiro Bastos had organised the gala because he had been “busy with my responsibilities in the CBF, CONMEBOL (the South American confederation) and FIFA.”
