ROME: Napoli won their fifth Italian cup after defeating Fiorentina 3-1 in a Rome final which kicked off 45 minutes late after three fans were shot, one critically, in an incident near the Olympic Stadium.

Two first-half goals from Italy international Lorenzo Insigne and a late strike from Dries Mertens helped the southern side, who finished with 10 men, to their second Cup victory in three years.

Insigne’s goals in the 11th and 17th minutes put Fiorentina on the back foot but Juan Vargas brought his side back into the game just before the half hour with a fantastic volley. Mertens then added Napoli’s third in injury time.

Fiorentina took the game to their rivals in the second half, with Giuseppe Rossi making a first appearance since January as a 69th-minute substitute, but Napoli held on despite Gokhan Inler’s 79th minute sending off.

Napoli coach Rafa Benitez said: “The most important thing tonight is the performance we saw on the pitch. We showed we wanted to win and went out and delivered.”

Guingamp’s cup

In France En Avant Guingamp won the cup for a second time when they beat Brittany neighbours Stade Rennes 2-0 in the Stade de France in a repeat of the 2009 showdown.

Guingamp, who are battling relegation, triumphed with goals by Jonathan Martins Pereira and Mustapaha Yatabare either side of halftime.

Five years after beating Rennes 2-1 in the final, Guingamp, under former Nantes midfielder Jocelyn Gourvennec, lifted the trophy again with a spririted performance in a festive atmosphere.

Martins Pereira opened the scoring when he fired into the top corner eight minutes before the break after Christophe Mandanne’s header was parried into his path by Benoit Costil.

Yatabare doubled the lead a minute into the second half when he headed home from Steeven Langil’s perfect cross and Rennes, who last won the French Cup 43 years ago, were beaten.

Boateng blast

In Germany defender Jerome Boateng was fined by Bayern Munich after being sent off at the end of their 4-1 win at Hamburg on Saturday after slapping opponent Kemel Demirbay.

Bayern ceo Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: “You could call this action brainless. It will be a fine in the high five digits. At 4-1 ahead and with fine minutes left it should not happen.”

Mario Goetze scored twice as Bayern bounced back from their 4-0 demolition by Real Madrid in midweek in the Champions League.

In Holland PSV Eindhoven made sure of European club competition next season with a 2-0 win over NAC Breda while Ajax Amsterdam closed their Dutch championship-winning season with a 2-2 draw at home to NEC Nijmegen.

In Spain the future of Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino was ever more uncertain after a 2-2 home draw against struggling Getafe virtually ended the club’s bid for a fifth La Liga title in six years.
