MANCHESTER: Angel Di Maria became a Manchester United player for £60m just as his new club suffered the latest humiliation in the short testing reign of Louis Van Gaal.

The Dutchman saw his Premier League giants crash 40-0 away to MK Dons in Milton Keynes in the League Cup as Di Maria was relaxing after the formality of a medical and sealing his move from European champions Real Madrid.

But the transfer was overshadowed by events in the land of the concrete cows.

United conceded four goals in a League Cup match against lower league opposition for the first time and this was the first time since 1995 they had been knocked out in the second round.

Usually United would have been preparing for a Champions League adventure. Now they have only the Premier League and the FA Cup on which to fix their ambitions.

Di Maria had been squeezed out at Madrid – who opened their Liga campaign last night with a 2-0 win over Cordoba – by the arrival of Colombian World Cup star James Rodriguez and was not prepared to stay and fight for his place.

The fee has surpassed the British record purchase fee of £50m which Chelsea paid Liverpool for Fernando Torres in 2011 with the 26-year-old set to make his debut at Burnley on Saturday. Di Maria joined Madrid in 2010 from Benfica.

The deal takes United’s summer spending to £135m after the arrivals of defenders Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo and midfielder Ander Herrera. This would be a record by any Premier League club.
