MADRID: Cristiano Ronaldo scored five goals and became Real Madrid’s all-time top scorer in the Primera Division as he inspired Los Blancos to a thumping 6-0 win away to Espanyol in Barcelona.

The Portugal forward’s impressive haul saw him move ahead of Alfredo di Stefano and Raul in one afternoon to amass a total of 229 goals in 203 matches – one ahead of Raul, who needed 550 games to reach his tally.

Ronaldo, who had failed to score in either of Madrid’s opening league games, needed just seven minutes to open his account against Espanyol, having bagged a treble here last season. He promptly scored again from the penalty spot and then completed his hat-trick on 20 minutes with the help of a cross from Gareth Bale.

Karim Benzema added a fourth before the break, and then in the second half Bale again laid on the pass for Ronaldo to strike for the fourth time and make Real Madrid history. But he was still not done, converting again from inside the area on 80 minutes.

Barcelona won 2-1 away to Atletico with a late winner from Lionel Messi who had started on the substitutes’ bench after the birth of his second son on Friday. Earlier Fernando Torres opened the scoring with Neymar equalising four minutes later. Neymar also played a key role in setting up Messi’s winner.

In Germany Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored two penalties as Borussia Dortmund beat Hanover 4-2 to stay top of the Bundesliga on goal difference ahead of champions Bayern Munich, who needed a controversial late penalty to edge past Augsburg 2-1.

Referee Knut Kircher admitted after the game that he and his linesman had been mistaken in awarding Bayern a late penalty which Thomas Muller converted for the winner.

In Italy struggling Juventus needed a late penalty of their own to avoid defeat in a 1-1 draw at home to early leaders Chievo Verona. Colombia winger Juan Cuadrado, on loan from Chelsea, was brought down by Bostjan Cesar and Paulo Dybala equalised from the spot.
