MADRID: The Spanish league has sold a package of domestic media rights for the 2016-17 to 2018-19 cycle to Mediapro and Telefonica for a combined €2.65bn.
Telefonica, which snapped up the first batch of collectivised rights for the top tier of Spanish soccer for this current season, has signed a deal worth €250m per season over the next three-year cycle.
Its Movistar subsidiary will have the first choice of one match from each round of fixtures.
However it was outbid, significantly, by Mediapro which has committed €633m per season for rights to eight La Liga games each weekend.
The two packages awarded were lots five and six in La Liga’s tender process. The remaining lots, which include free-to-air packages, more pay-TV games, and a Copa del Rey package, are yet to be awarded.
Mediapro has been marketing La Liga’s newly collectivised international rights across 2015 and combined broadcast revenues have now risen from around €800 mollion per season, to nearer €1.5 billion a season with more deals to come.
