MADRID: Kevin Gameiro, French striker of Europa League winners Sevilla, has been sold to Champions League runners-up Atletico de Madrid for €30m on a four-year contract.

Gameiro was unlucky to miss out on selection for France’s Euro 2016 squad after a fine spell with Sevilla for whom the 29-year-old scored 67 goals in three years.

An Atletico statement said: “Atletico de Madrid and Sevilla FC have reached an agreement for the transfer of Kevin Gameiro to our club. The transfer is contingent to the French player successfully undergoing a medical examination.”

Gameiro’s arrival signalled that Atletico have given up on earlier hopes of bringing back Diego Costa from Chelsea.

As part of the deal Luciano Vietto has gone in the other direction by joining Sevilla on a season-long loan with first option on a permanent deal.

Atletico finished third in La Liga last season and begin the new campaign at home to Deportivo Alaves on August 21.
