LONDON: Tottenham and England centre-forward Harry Kane has been ruled out for an indefinite period after damaging right ankle ligaments in Sunday’s 1-0 win over Sunderland.

Kane had to be carried off on a stretcher after scoring what proved to be the winning goal.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino fears grade two ligament damage could put the forward out for six to eight weeks.

Pochettino said: “He got a ligament ankle problem and we need to assess every day and see. Today it’s impossible to give a time for a recovery. I am not a doctor. I can only explain what the doctors said to me.

“We cannot guess whether it’s eight weeks, 10, four, one. It’s impossible to assess today and know how long.”

If the injury does keep Kane out for eight weeks, he will miss a number of key games for club and country.

Tottenham travel to CSKA Moscow in the Champions League and host Manchester City in the Premier League ahead of October’s international break, with fixtures against Bayer Leverkusen (twice), Leicester, Arsenal, West Ham, Monaco and Chelsea before November is out.

England play World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia in the October window, with Scotland coming to Wembley on Friday November 11.
