LONDON: Lionel Messi remains out in front in the ESM Golden Shoe competition for Europe’s leading league marksman but under heavy pressure.

Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Torino’s Andrea Belotti and Sporting Clube’s Bas Dost are all only one goal behimd with Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and Barcelona’s Luis Suarez  one goal further off the pace.

This season’s race appears to be seeing the eclipse of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid superstar, four times a winner of the Golden Shoe, is in joint 10th place with 19 goals – but nothing that a characteristic hat-trick could not put right.

Players’ goals totals are multiplied by a 1-2-3 ranking of the countries according to the UEFA Ranking of last July 1. That means the goals from numbers one (Spain) to five (Portugal) are doubled, goals from places six  (France) to 22 (Denmark) are multiplied by 1.5.

As in previous years the Golden Shoe does not consider goals in play-off competitions.
