LONDON: For all the acclaimed entertainment value of the English Premier League it is now nine years since any of its players finished on top of the rankings to win the ESM Golden Shoe as the leading marksman in European domestic league competition.

Indeed, not one Premier player this season is even in the latest top 10.

The last Premier winner was Cristiano Ronaldo who scored 31 goals for Manchester United in 2007-08.

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi has this season’s crown virtually in his hands with his 35 goals in the Spanish league, four clear of Sporting Lisbon’s Bas Dost. The nearest Premier challenger is Everton’s Romelu Lukaku in joint 11th place with 24 goals to his name. Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Chelsea’s Diego Costa are the only other Premier players in the top 20.

Players’ goals totals are multiplied by a 1-2-3 ranking of the countries according to the UEFA Ranking of last July 1. That means the goals from numbers one (Spain) to five (Portugal) are doubled, goals from places six  (France) to 22 (Denmark) are multiplied by 1.5.

As in previous years the Golden Shoe does not consider goals in play-off competitions.
