STOCKHOLM: New matchfixing fears have been raised in Sweden after last night’s game between top clubs IFK Gothenburg and AIK was postponed after a player reported having been approached to fix the result.

The Swedish football federation said a player from AIK had been subject to the offer of a significant sum of money on Tuesday.

Federation secretary general Hakan Sjostrand said: “With veiled threats, the match fixer demanded in return that the player would underperform in the Allsvenska match against IFK Gothenburg.”

The player instead contacted the federation which alerted police while postponing the game.

Sjostrand added: “This is also a message to those who try to destroy our football. I can promise you one thing. We will hunt you. We will hunt you as much as we can. We will do everything we can to identify you and get rid of you.”

According to a media report last year 43 players in the country’s top two flights were suspected of match-fixing.
