FRANKFURT: Germany’s Borussia Dortmund topped the European home attendance league table for the past season.

The latest annual crowd survey saw Dortmund record an average of 79,653 fans for every game in the Signal Iduna Park.

Some 25,000 standing fans offered Dortmund an advantage compared with their all-seater rivals in Spain and England. With the ‘safe standing’ system Dortmund boasts a maximum capacity of 81,359.

Second place was taken by Barcelona with an average attendance of 77,572 followed by Manchester United (75,290), then Bayern Munich (75,000) and Real Madrid (68,562).

The top 30 includes two second division clubs in England’s Newcastle United (51,106) and Germany’s Stuttgart (50,515). Both will be back in their top flights next season.

Scotland also two teams in the top 30 in Old Firm rivals Celtic (54,477) and Rangers (48,941).

The top 100 featured no fewer than 53 clubs from England and Germany – 27 and 16 respectively.
