ZURICH: FIFA has ordered that last year’s World Cup qualifier between South Africa and Senegal shouold be replayed because of corruption.

The match was played on November 12, 2016, and resulted in a 2-1 win for South Africa. However, the Senegalese federation reported referee Joseph Lamptey to FIFA and to the African confederation, accusing him of decisions which were  malicious and biased.

South Africa benefited from a penalty for a non-existent handball and a goal from a quickly-taken free kick when the referee was still sorting out the wall. A spokesman has indicated that SAFA may appeal.

Lamptey was subsequently suspended banned for life by the FIFA disciplinary committee for “match manipulation” – a decision now upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne.

The match will be replayed in November with the exact date to be confirmed in due course.

As Group D of the third round currently stands after revision, Burkina Faso and Cape Verde have six points apiece followed by Senegal on five and South Africa on one.
