FRANKFURT: Further confusion erupted over the weekend from the video referee system trial being undertaken in the German Bundesliga.

Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Marius Wolf was called back from the dressing rooms after having been initially sent off in his team’s 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich.

Wolf had been shown a red card for a challenge on James Rodriguez with less than 20 minutes to play, kicking a pitchside microphone in frustration as he walked off.

But referee Harm Osmers was prompted to look at the challenge again and he changed his mind after consulting video replays. Wolf returned and received a yellow card instead of red, allowing him to continue the game.

Wolf said: “I was in the changing room already. Then the team manager came and called me back, said the referee was looking at video evidence. I had already said he should do that. For me, it wasn’t a red card.”

The International Football Association Board decides next March whether to ratify the VAR system for use at the World Cup finals in Russia, as is being promoted by Gianni Infantino, president of world federation FIFA.
