TURIN: Cristiano Ronaldo’s eighth Champions League hat-trick means Atletico Madrid will be playing the final in their own home after Juventus overcame a 2-0 first leg defeat in their second round tie by winning 3-0 in front of their own fans in Turin and thus 3-2 on aggregate.

Ronaldo, winner of the Champions League previously with both Manchester United and Real Madrid, not only scored all three goals but struck the decisive tie-winner from a penalty five minutes from time.

Thus Juventus followed the turn-around examples already set in the round by Manchester United against Paris Saint-Germain and Ajax against holders Real Madrid.

The competition’s all-time leading goalscorer with 124 goals opened his account with a close-range header from Federico Bernardeschi’s cross, nodded a second after the break from Joao Cancelo’s delivery and won the day from the sport after Bernardeschi was fouled pushed down by the pursuing Angel Correa.

In the night’s other tie Manchester City thrashed Schalke 7-0 to progress into the quarter-finals 10-2 on aggregate.

Sergio Aguero opened the scoring from the spot and added a second three minutes later when Raheem Sterling’s backheel set him up from six yards.

Leroy Sane drilled in the third and picked up a hat-trick of assists after the break as City ran riot. Sterling, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden and Gabriel Jesus completed the rout of the German clubs.

The quarter-finals draw is on Friday morning.
