NYON: UEFA is set to announce St Petersburg, Munich and London as the hosts for a trio of Champions League finals.
.
Zenit St Petersburg’s 68,000-capacity Gazprom Arena is favourite to host the final of Europe’s premier club competition in 2021, with the 75,000-seat Allianz Arena, home to German champions Bayern Munich, staging the game in 2022.
Wembley, which holds 90,000, will then host the 2023 Champions League final to mark the centenary year of the original stadium first opening.
It was first revealed in February that either Munich or St Petersburg would host the 2021 Champions League final, while it was reported at the end of July that the Football Association was bidding to stage the showpiece in 2023.
UEFA is expected to confirm the hosts for the 2021 to 2023 editions of the Champions League final on September 24 at its executive committee meeting in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
If confirmed, 2021 would be the first time that the Gazprom Arena has staged the Champions League final, although it was used as a host stadium for last year’s FIFA World Cup.
The Allianz Arena last hosted the showpiece fixture back in 2012, when Bayern lost to English side Chelsea on penalties.
The new Wembley, meanwhile, which opened in 2006, has hosted the game on two occasions in 2011 and 2013.
This year’s Champions League final is set to take place at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, the scene of reigning European champions Liverpool’s famous comeback from three goals down at half-time to beat Italian giants AC Milan in the 2005 final.
