KEIR RADNEDGE REPORTS: Greg Clarke has stepped down with immediate effect as the British vice-president of world football federation FIFA.

This follows Clarke’s resignation earlier this week as chairman of the Football Association following what he accepted himself were inappropriate comments about diversity issues to a parliamentary committee.

He had intended to continue as a UEFA representative on FIFA Council until the home nations had settled on a replacement to be nominated at the European federation’s annual congress next spring.

However he has changed his mind after a conversation with UEFA president Aleksandr Ceferin.

A terse UEFA statement said only: “Following a telephone call this morning between the UEFA president and Greg Clarke, they agreed with Greg Clarke’s proposal that he should step down with immediate effect from his position as a UEFA representative on the FIFA Council.”
