FES: Nigeria kicked off their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a nervy but valuable 2–1 victory over Tanzania in Fès.
The Super Eagles seized the initiative in the first half through Semi Ajayi’s headed goal in the 36th minute, which gave them a deserved lead after early pressure and near-misses from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams.
Tanzania fought back early in the second half, with Charles M’Mombwa leveling for the Taifa Stars in the 50th minute, capitalising on a brief lapse in Nigeria’s defence. But Nigeria responded instantly: Ademola Lookman struck a superb shot into the top corner just two minutes later to restore the advantage and ultimately secure all three points.
Despite soaking up some late pressure — including a near equaliser deep into stoppage time — the Super Eagles saw out the result. The win puts Nigeria comfortably in the hunt alongside Tunisia, who later beat Uganda 3–1, though the Tunisians top Group C on goal difference after their commanding performance.
While the result was positive, head coach Éric Chelle will have noted defensive frailties to fix ahead of Nigeria’s next tough tests — particularly against Tunisia and Uganda later in the group stage.
Senegal made a statement in Tangier, comfortably dispatching Botswana with a convincing 3–0 win to open their campaign. Nicolas Jackson was the star, scoring twice (including a fine finish just before the hour mark) before Cherif Ndiaye struck late to seal the victory. Senegal dominated throughout and tops Group D on goal difference early on.
In the day’s other Group D action, DR Congo edged Benin 1–0 in Rabat, with Théo Bongonda scoring the lone goal. The win gives DR Congo a solid platform to challenge Senegal in the group but will need more cutting edge in attack in upcoming games.
Tunisia also impressed today, claiming a 3–1 victory over Uganda. Ellyes Skhiri and Elias Achouri (twice) scored to put the Carthage Eagles in control before a late consolation from Uganda did little to change the outcome. The result sees Tunisia top Group C ahead of Nigeria on goal difference.
With one round complete, Senegal and DR Congo lead Group D, while Tunisia and Nigeria are at the top of Group C after today’s fixtures. Nigeria will now turn their attention to a pivotal clash with Tunisia later in the group stage, a fixture that could shape their path to the knockout rounds.
