BAKU: George Russell delivered a masterclass on the streets of Baku to claim victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, converting pole position into his third triumph of the season.

Having dominated qualifying by over eight-tenths of a second, the Mercedes driver proved untouchable in clean air, defying a fierce late charge from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to secure his eighth career win by a razor-thin 0.196 seconds.

From the lights out, Russell controlled the pace along the narrow walls of the Baku City Circuit. He quickly built an 11-second gap over the pursuing pack, managing his tires while McLaren’s Oscar Piastri tried to keep Red Bull at bay. However, the street circuit’s notorious unpredictability soon threatened to derail his afternoon.

The race was turned upside down on lap 31 when Williams’ Alex Albon crashed, bringing out the Safety Car and wiping out Russell’s hard-earned lead. Verstappen, who had started eighth, wasted no time on the restart to carve his way into second place. Almost immediately, further chaos erupted further back in the pack. Alpine’s Franco Colapinto locked up into Turn 1, triggering a dramatic collision that eliminated his teammate Pierre Gasly and collected Lando Norris. The resulting pile-up forced a second Safety Car intervention and left a furious Norris calling for strict driver penalties.

When racing resumed for a final sprint to the finish, Russell faced immense pressure. Verstappen attached himself to the Mercedes’ rear wing, hunting for an opportunity down the long main straight. A brief loss of engine boost on the final lap added a late scare for the leader, allowing Verstappen to pull alongside as they sprinted toward the line. Russell held his nerve with composure, placing his car perfectly to cross the line just fractions of a second ahead.

Isack Hadjar rounded out the podium in third, marking an impressive return from injury for Red Bull, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished fourth. Meanwhile, championship leader Kimi Antonelli recovered from a qualifying crash to take fifth. Russell’s flawless drive chipped away at Antonelli’s lead in the standings, reasserting his authority as a major force as the championship battle intensifies.
