MADRID: Win or lose, there will be a massive public party in Madrid awaiting Spain’s national team when they return home after the Euro 2012 final in Kyiv on Sunday.

The Spanish capital – which wants to host the 2020 Olympics and wastes no chance to proclaim its sporting commitment – has set aside Monday (July 2) for an open bus tour down the main streets of the centre of Madrid, ending up at the city council’s Palacio de Cibeles.

Mayor Ana Botella said: “Madrid is going to celebrate with the national team because this team has achieved the greatest successes in the history of Spanish sport.”

Botella will not be in Kyiv. She said: “There will be enough city and governmental representatives at the final, better that stay here and work.”

She did not rule out going down to join the crowds watching the match on public screens in and around the nearby Estadio Bernabeu.
