DOHA: Qatar Airways has been named as the official sponsor for today’s high-profile friendly between Spain and Uruguay, being held in Doha.

Taking place in the Qatari capital’s Khalifa Stadium, reigning European and world champion Spain will face Copa America holder Uruguay in the international friendly. A host of well-known players are expected to take part, as both countries continue their preparations for the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

“Qatar Airways has a strong affiliation with football with the carrier bring the official airline of the country’s national football team,” said Qatar Airways CEO, Akbar Al Baker. “Our sponsorship of the Spain versus Uruguay match reinforces the airline’s passion for this exciting sport, and there is much more planned linking Qatar with the football world as Qatar gears up for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.”

Along with its partnership with the Qatar Football Association, Qatar Airways made a significant move in the football sponsorship market last year. It was announced in November that the company will take over as FC Barcelona’s shirt sponsor from the 2013-14 season as part of the Spanish Primera Division giant’s agreement with Qatar Sports Investments (QSI).
