KEIR RADNEDGE in LONDON: Berlin’s Olympic stadium, for the first time, will host the climax of the European club season in 2015.

The executive committee of European federation UEFA decided today in London that Berlin should follow where Stuttgart(1959), Munich(1979, 1993, 1997 and 2012) and Schalke (2004) led in having hosted the Champions League Cup final.

Selecting Berlin will increase the profile of the city which is likely to be proposed by the German federation to host the semis and final of the pan-European Euro 2020.

Wembley is another likely major contender along with, possibly, Istanbul and Rome.

Next season’s Champions League Final has already been scheduled for the Benfica stadium in Lisbon.

The 2015 Europa League Final has been awarded to Warsaw with 2014 already scheduled for the new Juventus stadium in Turin which replaced the unloved Stadio delle Alpi.

UEFA’s annual congress in London tomorrow is expected to hear a proposal to offer the winners of the Europa League access into the following season’s Champions League.

This would take effect from 2015-16 and is one of several ideas under consideration as UEFA seeks to secure the fragile credibility of its secondary club competition.
