MADRID: Spanish league president Javier Tebas has said nine domestic games are currently being investigated on suspicion of possible match-fixing, including three in the top division.
Tebas said the other six games are in the second tier Segunda Division. Two of the suspected games – Girona v Xerez and Hercules Alicante v Racing Santander – are already the subject of court action. A game between Levante and Deportivo de La Coruna is also under scrutiny.
He added: “Match fixing is a cancer we must eradicate.”
Girona president, Joaquim Boudas, confirmed corruption concerns, said: “We have been involved in a very sad episode for Spanish football and I have to defend the interests of our fans.”
Unlike many countries, matchfixing is a crime in Spain and can result in prison sentences for individuals or a club being banned from official competition.
