ZURICH: The rise and rise of women within FIFA has been enhanced with the appointment of Delia Fischer as new head of media.

Fischer, who joined the world football federation 11 years ago, succeeds Pekka Odrizola who is leaving to take up a new role back home in Spain.

Her appointment follows the decision by FIFA Congress, in May, to bring three women on to the governing executive committee – Lydia Nsekera (Burundi) and co-opted Moya Dodd (Australia) and Sonia Bien-Aime (Turks & Caicos).

Fischer, on her personal Twitter profile, describes herself as a “passionate traveller” – doubtless an essential quality for any FIFA high-flyer.
